A Radiological Investigation on the Hand Development in Human Fetuses Throughout the Fetal Period and an Evaluation Performed in Terms of its Clinical Importance Hand Development International Journal of Morphology
Raziye,Desdicioglu; Ceren,Uguz; Kadir,Desdicioglu; Osman,Sulak; Mehmed Ali,Malas.
It was aimed in this study that the morphometric development of the hand in human fetuses throughout the fetal period be radiologically investigated and the clinical importance of this period be evaluated. A total of 50 fetuses with no external pathology or anomaly, and the ages of which varied between 20-40 gestational weeks were incorporated into the study. The fetuses were separated into groups according to gestational weeks, trimesters and months. After the general external measurements of the fetuses were performed, mammography and hand radiographies of the fetuses were shot in the way that their hands would be in a pronational position. Afterwards, the morphometric measurements of the hands were performed with the help of a digital caliper through...

A Study on the Structure and Morphologic Development of Calcaneal Tendon and Triceps Surae Muscle in Human Fetuses during the Fetal Period and the Evaluation of Clinical Importance of Calcaneal Tendon International Journal of Morphology
Kadir,Desdicioglu; Ceren,Uguz; Busra,Sakalli; Esra,Koyuncu; Ali,Malas Mehmet.
It was aimed that the morphometric development of calcaneal tendon and the structures building it up in human fetuses during the fetal period be anatomically studied and that its clinical importance be evaluated. The study comprised a total of 102 fetus legs (51 human fetuses: 26 male and 25 female) whose ages varied between 15-40 gestational week, without external pathology or anomaly. The fetuses were divided in groups according to gestational weeks, trimesters and months. In the wake of the general external measurements of fetuses, leg dissection was performed. Afterwards, the morphometric parameters of gastrocnemius muscle, soleus muscle and calcaneal tendon were measured. The averages and the standard deviations of the measured parameters were...

Amniotic fluid exerts a neurotrophic influence on fetal neurodevelopment via the ERK/GSK-3 pathway Biol. Res.
Jang,Yongwoo; Kim,Eun-Kyung; Shim,Won-Sik; Song,Ki-Min; Kim,Sung Min.
BACKGROUND: The fetus is surrounded by the amniotic fluid (AF) contained by the amniotic sac of the pregnant female. The AF is directly conveyed to the fetus during pregnancy. Although AF has recently been reported as an untapped resource containing various substances, it remains unclear whether the AF could influence fetal neurodevelopment. RESULTS: We used AF that was extracted from embryos at 16 days in pregnant SD rat and exposed the AF to the neural cells derived from the embryos of same rat. We found that the treatment of AF to cortical neurons increased the phosphorylation in ERK1/2 that is necessary for fetal neurodevelopment, which was inhibited by the treatment of MEK inhibitors. Moreover, we found the subsequent inhibition of glycogen synthase...

Birth defects in Brazil: Outcomes of a population-based study Genet. Mol. Biol.
Oliveira-Brancati,Camila Ive Ferreira; Ferrarese,Valéria Cristina Carvalho; Costa,Antonio Richieri; Fett-Conte,Agnes Cristina.
Abstract Birth defects (BDs) are functional and structural alterations in embryonic or fetal development. With an incidence of approximately 3-5%, BDs are a leading cause of infant mortality and lifelong disability. A population-based prospective case-control study was conducted for one year with 5204 infants, between March 1st, 2011 and February 29th, 2012 in the city of São José do Rio Preto, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The incidence of BDs was 3.2% [95% confidence interval (95%CI): 2.8-3.8%]. The most common congenital anomalies were heart diseases in isolation (11.2%; 95%CI: 7.3-16.9%) followed by Down syndrome (9.5%; 95%CI: 5.9-14.8%), neural tube defects (8.9%; 95%CI: 5.4-14.1), urinary tract anomalies (7.7%; 95%CI: 4.4-12.7%), and polydactyly (7.0%;...

Dynamics of Stomach Growth in the Human Fetal Period: a Postmortem Study International Journal of Morphology
Gworys,Bohdan; Jeka,Slawomir; Brukiewa,Radoslaw; Rymko,Marcin.
The aim of this work was to analyze the stomach growth rate, variability of proportion and shape during prenatal period, as well as evaluation of final features differentiation process distinctive for perinatal period. It seems interesting to compare stomach growth analyzed in situ on post-mortem fetuses with results obtained by other authors evaluating this process in sonographic examinations. Research was conducted on 225 post-mortem fetuses 12th to 40 th week of fetal age. There were measurements of stomach total length, lengths of greater and lesser curvature and cardia and pylorus widths performed. We evaluated the thickness of stomach front wall and bottom and its total mass. Statistical analysis was performed using statistical program package...

Expression of β-catenin and c-myc during human common bile duct development: a possible role in the morphogenesis of the common bile duct BJMBR
Guo,W.L.; Zhang,Q.; Wang,J..
β-catenin and c-myc play important roles in the development of tissues and organs. However, little is known about their expression patterns during the development of the human common bile duct. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect β-catenin and c-myc expression in common bile duct samples from postmortem tissues of 14 premature infants and 6 spontaneously aborted fetuses. The expression of β-catenin and c-myc was also analyzed by Western blot. The samples were divided into four groups based on the stage of human fetal development: 12, 13-27, 28-37, and >37 weeks. The Image-Pro Plus v. 6.0 image analysis software was used to calculate the mean qualifying score (MQS). At fetal stages 12, 13-27, 28-37, and >37 weeks, MQS of β-catenin were...

Histomorphological evaluation of the digital coronary region at different fetal development stages of Holstein cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rabelo,R.E.; Vulcani,V.A.S.; Sant'ana,F.J.F.; Lima,C.R.O.; Dutra,H.T.; Rabbers,A.S.; Silva,L.A.F..
The scientific literature lacks detailed morphological descriptions of the histological development and cell differentiation of fetal bovine hoof. In this study, 40 extremity members of Holstein bovine fetuses were collected and divided into four groups (G1 to G4) based on the estimated age. Fragments were removed from wall and sole, processed and stained with hematoxylin - eosin (HE) for light microscopy observation. In G1, it was found that the epidermis was very thin, including keratinocyte layers and clusters of mesenchymal cells. In group G2 it was observed that the thickness of the epidermis covering the limbs remained variable and laminar corium developed in the germinal layer. In group G3 it was noted that in the germinal epithelium there were...

Study About the Development of the Temporomandibular Joint in the Human Fetuses International Journal of Morphology
Alves,Nilton.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly specialized articulation that differs from all the other synovial articulations for many reasons. In children, different from what we observe in adults, these articulations have rarely been studied under the morphofunctional aspect, mainly in the embryonary and fetal stages. In this study 10 fetuses with ages varying from 16 to 39 weeks of intrauterine life were used, and it could be observed that the fibers and thickness of the articular disc, as well as the articular capsule and the condylar process, suffer modifications according to age. It was also observed that the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle inserts itself in the articular disc and capsule in all the ages studied. Also, the maturation of...
